SEATTLE -- Starbucks is shutting down its American stores Tuesday afternoon, but just for three hours.

CEO Howard Schultz announced the closure, which will start at 5:30 p.m. local time, to energize 135,000 employees.

Starbucks' nearly 7,100 stores across the United States will participate in the brief barista re-education, which will focus on espresso standards.
